Former Rover’s captain John Moore sadly died yesterday morning, 16th September.
John began his rugby as a full-back at Grangefield Grammar School, before moving to the centre or no. 10 when he joined Stockton Colts. He also played stand-off for Durham County colts and the North of England.
Moving up to senior rugby, he soon became a highly regarded no. 8 and went on to captain Stockton for five years before joining Rovers in 1975.
Just a year later he made his debut for Durham County against Scottish Borders at Hawick, and went on to play 4 further Championship matches that season. The following season he captained the County against Scottish Borders at Blaydon.
During Rover’s centenary season John was delighted to score a try against the Barbarians, although he was not so pleased when, playing in the Twickenham sevens, the commentator referred to him as “the veteran, John Moore.”
Although he later moved on to Middlesbrough where his son Simon had a most successful career, John always retained his affection for Rovers, becoming a Life Member of the Club.
He will be sadly missed by all who knew him here at the Friarage and we will observe a minute’s silence before the first team game on Saturday.
